Macron: Must Be Discussion On Whether EU Budget Stimulus Is Enough

Answering questions from journalists after presenting the French aims for its 6-month presidency of the European Council, President Emmanuel Macron states that there 'should be a discussion on whether the EU's budget stimulus is sufficient' to deal with the impact of the pandemic.

  • States that the EU's budget policy might entail additional financing from financial markets. Says that "Faced with the climate, digital, health, cultural and strategic transition, our Europe must make the right investments at the right level and rethink our budgetary framework in this regard"
  • Says the EU budget debate is 'not about whether we support the 3% rule', referring to the Stability and Growth Pact's criteria of a 3% limit on budget deficits.
