Macron Promises That Ukraine Will be Rebuilt As 'Part Of Europe'

French President Emmanuel Macron has declared that France has resolutely chosen the EU (reference to recent French elections) at his speech to conclude the EU Parliament Conference of Future of Europe. Livestream can be followed here: LINK

  • The three keynote speakers at the conference have all hinted at the creation of a new security architecture for the EU. Macron specifically stated that the EU needs a greater defence capacity. He said 'we want to be a partner but not dependent' and the EU must invest more in defence to protect the countries of the border of the Union.
  • Macron: 'On the 9th of May, freedom and hope for the future has the face of the European Union.' 'What is our goal? [in Ukraine] Faced with the unilateral decision of Russia to invade Ukraine... Ensure that Ukraine wins and to ensure that this war comes to an end...'
  • Macron clarifies: 'We are not at war with Russia. We are maintaining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine... and it is up to Ukraine only to decide on negotiating conditions with Russia.'
  • Macron: 'We will be there when it comes to rebuilding Ukraine as a part of Europe.'
  • Macron says that the conference will change the structures of the EU: 'On behalf of the Presidency of the council, I promise that [this conference] will not be a mere formality but will lead to practical and concrete results.'
