Macron Says He Will Address IRA Concerns With US VP Harris

US-EU

French President Emmanuel Macron has told reporters at the Munich Security Conference that he will address French concerns with the US Inflation Reduction Act in a meeting today with US Vice President Kamala Harris.

  • Macron has led the European movement to match US subsidies with an equally broad package of tax incentives. This hawkishness has put him at odd with a number of European partners, including Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who has been described as leading the EU "frugal bloc" advising against additional EU financing.
  • Macron hinted at moderating his position, last month: “We need an EU instrument that is ambitious and as quick as what the Americans are doing. We need €380 billion to invest in green tech. Do we need new money in the system… My priority is that we speed things up, I’m in favor of using the money that we already have."
  • US Trade Rep Katherine Tai is also in attendance at the MSC and will take to the stage in just over an hour with her regular IRA sparring partner, EU Commission VP Valdis Dombrovskis, to discuss "Global Trade Under Pressure."
