Macron To Accept Gov't Resignation By End Of Day

FRANCE

President Emmanuel Macron has told PM Gabriel Attal that he will accept the resignation of the latter's gov't by the end of the day. According to reports from individuals at the meeting, Macron told Attal that he would remain in place as PM in a caretaker capacity "managing current affairs" for "a certain time", "a few weeks".

  • Le Monde reports on the restrictions regarding the presentation of a budget under this caretaker system. No caretaker gov't has put forward legislation under the Fifth Republic as, "..."it may seem inappropriate to refer the matter to Parliament even though it is deprived of its strongest prerogative, namely the possibility of overthrowing the government" , according to the General Secretariat of the Government (SGG). However, to provide the country with a budget, a resigning government can submit a bill, according to the SGG. If it fails to have it adopted within 70 days, or does not submit it in time, it can then proceed by ordinances ( article 47 of the Constitution )."
  • The political paralysis comes as the leftist NFP struggles to reach agreement on a PM candidate. Former EU Affairs and Transport Minister Clement Beaune called for a broad alliance to replace Attal, posting on X: "End of the sketch. The only path is a coalition of communists, ecologists, socialists, centrist parties, and moderate LR members who gain autonomy. "From [leftist NFP deputy François] Ruffin to [moderate LR deputy Philippe] Juvin," in short. A union of responsible individuals.Abandon posturing and deceit, for the sake of our country."
