Macron To Deliver Marathon Presser At 1500CET To Kick Off Election Run

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to deliver a lengthy press conference later this afternoon in Aubervilliers, Saint-Denis northeast of Paris. Presser set to start around 1500CET (1000ET, 1400GMT). Macron expected to speak for around an hour before 2-3 hours of questions afterwards from the 250+ reporters in attendance.

  • The presser can be seen as a launching of his re-election campaign ahead of the first round of the presidential election taking place on 10 April.
  • Latest first round poll from Opinionway has Macron on 29%, right-wing Rassemblement National leader Marine Le Pen on 17%, meaning these two would advance to the second round. Far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon is in joint-third on 12% alongside centre-right Les Republicains nominee Valerie Pecresse. Far-right polemicist Eric Zemmour is in fifth on 11%.
  • Macron remains the overwhelming favourite to win re-election, with betting markets giving the incumbent a 91.7% implied probability of winning a second term.
