Macron To Meet Belarusian Opposition Leader Tomorrow

FRANCE

The Elysee Palace has announced that President Emmanuel Macron will meet with Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tikhanovskaya during his visit to Lithuania and Latvia.

  • Macron will be the first major Western leader to meet Tikhanovskaya, who currently resides in Lithuania having fled Belarus due to concerns for her safety.
  • Tikhanovskaya, who ran against Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in the August election - widely criticised as neither free nor fair - has called for Macron to act as a mediator between the two sides. Macron has previously called for Lukashenko to resign from office.
  • The situation in Belarus remains tense as anti-gov't protests continue, while many observers wait to see what action, if any, Russian President Vladimir Putin takes in defending the Lukashenko regime.
