Macron To Meet w/Fmr Pres'; LFI Calls 7 Sep Demonstration Against 'Coup'

FRANCE

As President Emmanuel Macron continues talks with various parties, parliamentary groups, and political 'personalities', the left-wing La France Insoumise ('France Unbowed', LFI) has called for a national demonstration on 7 September against the president and his refusal to appoint a PM from the left. They claim that by not appointing a PM from the largest bloc in the National Assembly it is effectively a 'coup' by the president.

  • LFI's allies within the leftist New Popular Front (NFP) - the centre-left Socialist Party (PS) - have made it clear that they do not back the mobilisation against the president's stance "at this stage".
  • Having met with representatives from the catch-all Liberties, Independents, Overseas and Territories (LIOT) group earlier today, Macron is set to meet with his two immediate predecessors - Presidents Francois Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy - to discuss the situation with them. Since the July election, Hollande has sat as a deputy in the National Assembly for the PS.
  • Macron will meet with senior figures from the Republican Right (the parliamentary group of the conservative Les Republicains) on 28 July as he seeks to cobble together a majority. Sarkozy has not played an active role in frontline politics since 2017 but is still seen as an important influence on the Gaullist centre-right. The Republican Right group that is opposed to LR president Eric Ciotti aligning his parliamentary faction with Marine Le Pen and the Rassemblement National.
