Macron-VdL Presser At 1115CET Following Morning's Talks

French President Emmaneul Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will hold a press conference at 1115CET (0515ET, 1015GMT) following talks between the two earlier this morning.

  • VdL and the College of Commissioners have been in Paris most of the week in an effort to show the Commission's committment to working with the French gov't following is assumption of the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1 Jan.
  • With the French presidential election coming up, Macron is seen to favour an activist French presidency of the Council. Significant focus on enhancing EU's 'strategic autonomy', essentially making it a global power player in its own right. Will require previously unseen unity among EU member states to achieve, but tensions in the East giving the push greater impetus.

  • Later today European commissioners set to hold talks with leaders of French political groups, the Foreign and European Affairs committees of the National Assembly, and the Senate.
