Macron's Approval Ratings Give Boost To Second Term Prospects

FRANCE

A poll from BVA shows President Emmanuel Macron's approval ratings at a higher level than his two immediate predecessors after four years in office, in what could be seen as a boost to his potential winning of a second term in next year's election.

  • Presidential approval after 4 years in office : Jacques Chirac (RPR): 65%, Emmanuel Macron (LREM): 39%, Francois Mitterrand (PS): 37%, Nicolas Sarkozy (UMP): 31%, Francois Hollande (PS): 19%, BVA
  • Macron's approval rating of 39% after four years in office is beaten only by two-term president from 1995-2007 Jacques Chirac.
  • His two immediate predecessors both had lower approval ratings at this point in their terms than Macron, and indeed both Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Hollande ended up as one-term presidents. Conservative Sarkozy was defeated by Socialist Party candidate Hollande in 2012, while Hollande did not contest the 2017 election given his dire approval ratings at the time.
