Maersk Warns Red Sea Chaos Could Last into H2

Shipping giant Maersk has warned that ongoing disruptions to flows through the Red Sea could drag into H2 2024, causing heavy congestion and delays for US bound goods, according to Reuters.

  • "Be prepared for the Red Sea situation to last into the second half of the year and build longer transit times into your supply chain planning," Maersk's head of North America, Charles van der Steene, said cited by Reuters.
  • Maersk has told its customers to prepare for higher shipping costs as extended shipping times push up freight rates.
  • The attacks by Houthi rebels on merchant ships has pushed most vessels to avoid the region and divert around the longer Cape of Good hope route.
