HONG KONG
HONG KONG: Main event in the UK House of Commons today at 1230BST (1330CET,
0730ET) with Foreign Sec. Dominic Raab giving the UK gov'ts official response to
Beijing's imposition of a new national security law on Hong Kong.
- The new law came into force today, which also marks the 23rd anniversary of
the handover of Hong Kong from British to Chinese rule.
- The UK gov't had previously said it was considering offering a 'pathway to
citizenship' for those Hongkongers who hold a British National (Overseas)
passports by removing the 6-month limit for staying in the UK.
- There have been calls to broaden the remit of the offer to all those eligible
to be BN(O)s rather than just current passport holders (increasing the offer
from 300k to 2.9mn people). Some have also called for the UK to offer full
citizenship, rather than a pathway.
- Depending on what Raab's statement says, it could mark a major schism in
Sino-British relations. Beijing has strongly rebuffed any attempt by the UK to
get involved in HK affairs.
