Majority of EU Countries Miss Final NECP Deadline

Only four EU countries have submitted their final national energy and climate plans (NECP) by the 30 June deadline – opening the door for the European Commission to start infringement proceedings, according to Montel.

  • Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden are the only nations to have submitted their final NECPs by the set deadline. But Italy did send their plan to the EC today.
  • The EC plans to discuss this urgently with EU energy and environment ministers at their upcoming informal meetings this month.
  • Infringement proceedings have been started against Austria and Poland, which have still not submitted their draft updated NECPs which were due by 30 June last year.
  • The European Commission's assessment of the draft plans in December found that they were collectively not ambitious enough to meet several of the EU’s key targets.
