MALAYSIA: PM Calls Snap Election Within 60 Days

POLITICAL RISK

Malaysian PM Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced the dissolution parliament and calling of a snap election to take place within 60 days (latest date 9 December) after holding a special meeting with the king. The election had not been due to take place until Q3 2023, but was called earlier due to infighting within Yaakob's governing alliance.

  • Many within the governing Barisan Nasional alliance, and even the opposition have called on Yaakob not to hold an election in November or December, given that this is the height of the monsoon season, with flooding anticipated making the holding of a general election a difficult project.
  • Yaakob's United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) party has performed well in recent state elections, potentially making the holding of a snap vote a more attractive prospect.
