Malaysia PM Resigns, Infitting with Weekend Reports

ASIA
  • Not unexpected given the weekend reports of the PM's likely resignation today. Muhyiddin Yassin is to continue as caretaker PM while the country goes through the process of finding a new prime minister.
  • The King has stressed in his statement that a general election is not the best option for Malaysia, but there remains uncertainty about who will be appointed the next leader and how the decision-making process will play out.
  • Names in the frame for next leader are the deputy PM Yaakob and long-time MP Hamzah - both of the opposition UMNO party. The next leader will need to command majority support of the house before being formally appointed.
