Malaysia's UMNO Pull Rug From Beneath Muhyiddin

Energy Minister and UMNO lawmaker Anuar handed in resignation, while UMNO Pres Zahid reiterated that the party has parted ways with PM Muhyiddin. Zahid insisted that the government is no longer backed by majority of lawmakers, as enough UMNO MPs have signed a declaration to pull support, which has been already presented to the King.
  • Local political analysts estimate that only around 104/105 out of 222 MPs still support the government, but the suspension of parliament prevents testing it in a vote of no confidence. UMNO sources told Malaysiakini that 14 of their MPs have retracted support for Muhyiddin so far.
  • The premier earlier sought to diffuse the current crisis and said that the motion to revoke emergency laws will be discussed by the Cabinet today and then debated in parliament in September.
  • Malaysiakini reported that several senior Cabinet members, including Dep PM & UMNO lawmaker Ismail Sabri, were spotted entering PM Muhyiddin's residence last night, but the outcome of these talks is unknown.
