Malaysian Election Off'ls To Determine GE15 Date Amid Calls For Holding It By Mid-Nov

ASIA

Malaysia's King consented to the dissolution of parliament so that the mandate to choose the government could be returned to the people, the royal palace said in a statement released soon after Prime Minister Ismail Sabri announced his widely touted decision to call a snap election. The monarch was "disappointed" with the current political situation in the country and "expressed the hope that the Election Commission will conduct the general election in the near future, taking in to account the northeast monsoon season expected to start in mid-November."

  • The Secretary General of the ruling United Malays National Organisation party echoed the call for holding the election by mid-November to avoid disruptions during the flooding season. He said that UMNO's general assembly will be brought forward from Nov 23-26.
  • The Election Commission will hold a special meeting to determine the timeline for the upcoming general election (GE15). The poll must be held within 60 days from the dissolution of parliament.
  • Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar confirmed that all the activities, sessions and meetings of parliament have been cancelled. Lawmakers were about to start debating Budget 2023 today after its tabling last Friday.
  • By convention, most state assemblies (except Sarawak, Sabah, Malacca and Johor) are dissolved around the same time as the federal legislature, so that state elections can be held concurrently with a general election.
  • It is unclear which states will dissolve their assemblies this time, amid lingering concerns over the upcoming monsoon season. UMNO Pres Zahid said states run by the Barisan Nasional alliance (Perlis, Pahang an Perak) are preparing to dissolve.
