SOUTH AFRICA: Malema Says EFF Could Join Governing Coalition If It Excludes DA

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Economic Freedom Fighters' (EFF's) Julius Malema was elected unopposed for third term as party leader, with Godrich Gardee took the position of deputy leader, filling the post vacated by Floyd Shivambu, who defected to the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party. Malema declared that the EFF is ready to enter the government when the current ruling coalition (government of national unity or GNU) collapses, while predicting that if President Cyril Ramaphosa does not implement two contentious clauses of the Basic Education Law Amendment (BELA) Act, members of his party will oust him. Tensions over the BELA Act have weighted onto the African National Congress's (ANC's) relations with the GNU's second-largest Democratic Alliance (DA) in recent weeks. Malema further predicted that if Ramaphosa keeps his post, ANC will likely elect an anti-GNU president during its 2027 elective conference, which would open the door to cooperation with the EFF.
  • Speaking at the MK party's first anniversary, its leader Jacob Zuma set himself an ambitious target of winning 2/3 of seats in the next general election and called for the unification of all black political parties under a single banner.
  • South African markets are closed for the Reconciliation Day, which is a national public holiday.
