Mapisa-Nqakula Takes Special Leave As Speaker, Hands Herself Over To Police

SOUTH AFRICA
  • National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has taken special leave with immediate effect after the Hawks (special police unit) raided her home as part of a corruption investigation. The official has notified the relevant authorities and the African National Party (ANC) about her decision. Eyewitness News and IOL report that Mapisa-Nqakula has handed herself over to the police in Pretoria and is expected to appear before the Commercial Crimes Court in the capital, despite an earlier Daily Maverick piece suggesting that she has filed court papers to interdict law enforcement agencies from arresting her. Meanwhile, the main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) is preparing a motion of no confidence against the Speaker just two months before the national and provincial elections, in which the ANC may struggle to defend its parliamentary majority.
