Marathon Gov't Talks End, Rutte Set To Become Longest-Serving PM

NETHERLANDS

The Netherlands will have an official majority coalition gov't in January following the conclusion of marathon talks between the four parties of the caretaker gov't late in the evening of 13 December.

  • Incumbent PM Mark Rutte, from the centre-right liberal People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), will begin a record-breaking fourth term in office at the head of a four-party gov't alongside the centrist liberal Demcorats 66 (D66), the centre-right Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), and the social conservative Christian Union (CU). The gov't will hold 77 seats in the House of Representatives to the opposition's 73 (see chart below).

  • The agreement reached still has to be agreed by each constituent party. The talks, at 271 days, far exceeded the previous record which stood at 215 days.
  • The new gov't has stated that policy priorities will be investing in housebuilding, greater spending on healthcare and schools, and enhancing education subsidies.
  • Should the gov't serve until late-2022, Rutte would overtake Ruud Lubbers as the Netherlands' longest-serving prime minsiter. Coming into a fourth term will put him on equal footing with his predecessor Jan Peter Balkenende, who also served four terms.
