Markey: BBB Can Limit Russian Coercion

US

Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) has spoken on the Senate floor stating that the climate provisions of Build Back Better are the best way to remove coercive influence of Russia and Saudi Arabia.

  • Earlier on Twitter Markey wrote: 'Our global addiction to oil and natural gas—from Russia, from Saudi Arabia—keeps our world locked into dangerous cycles of conflict and corruption. But we have a way out. We can build a pathway to a more prosperous, more peaceful clean energy future.'
  • The has been a lack of consensus within the Democratic caucus about the future of the USD$1.7 trillion Build Back Better bill. It appears that the climate spending items are the most likely to be salvaged although President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been vocal in their support of the social spending items in the bill. Regularaly cited Child Tax Credits as a key tool for tackling inflation.
  • The current political will in Washington to neuter Russia might provide impetus to push the green aspects of the bill.
