McConnell-WH Unilateral Action On Debt Ceiling w/o Congress Not An Option

Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has just spoken on the chamber floor regarding yesterday's high-level talks on the looming debt ceiling X-date. States that "White House unilateral action on the debt ceiling without Congress is not an option...There's exactly one way, just one way, to prevent a pointless, avoidable crisis - the bipartisan negotiations that Speaker McCarthy has been calling for since way back in February."

  • McConnell states that "Yesterday's meeting was an overdue first step. I hope President Biden has begun to wake up...The White House has to stop sleepwalking toward default and reach a spending deal with the Speaker."
  • McConnell has previously stated that he is not directly involved, and that it is for Biden and McCarthy (R-CA) to resolve. However, given that any deal will need to get through the Senate with 60 votes, the actions of the veteran lawmaker could prove crucial in getting any eventual deal over the line.
