MEPs Approve Resolution Re: Concerns On Hungary Presidency

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

A non-binding resolution has been passed in the European Parliament raising concerns about the ability of Hungary to effectively hold the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union in H224. The resolution was widely expected to passgiven the large number of political groups giving their backing. In the event, 442 MEPs voted in favour, 144 against and 33 abstained.

  • Hidvéghi Balázs, an MEP from Hungarian PM Viktor Orban's right-wing populist Fidesz Party tweeted: "The European Parliament has become a captive of leftist MEPs, who maniacally attack Hungary. They fail to see that true corruption and rule of law issues are to be found in Brussels and not in Member States."
  • The passage of the resolution does not strip Hungary of the presidency (something that legal experts are not sure whether MEPs have the power to do) but does raise the prospect of a 'boycott' of the Hungarian presidency by the parliament due to concerns about rule of law violations in Hungary.
