MEXICO: Cabinet-Level Talks On Migration To Take Place Friday

US

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas will host their Mexico counterparts in Washington on Friday to discuss bilateral measures to stem the flow of migrants into the US.

  • NBC notes, "the negotiations began last month when Mayorkas and [Blinken] went to Mexico to ask Mexico to do more to stop U.S.-bound migrants."
  • Bloomberg reports that, according to sources, "both sides acknowledge that it isn’t possible to stop undocumented migration completely," but they are, "committed to take steps to restore migration to historic levels that they consider sustainable."
  • The issue of migration at the US' southern border is a major political issue ahead of the 2024 presidential election. If the Biden administration can strike a deal with the Mexican government to limit migrant flows from the south and legislate new provision to secure the border, currently under negotiation in the Senate, then it could patch a political vulnerability for Democrats.
