Mexico to Dredge Port to Draw Supertankers

Mexico plans to turn the Pacific port of Salina Cruz into the country’s deepest to draw oil supertankers and establish a viable trade route to challenge the Panama Canal, according to Bloomberg.

  • The expansion would allow for post Panamax class vessels to arrive in Mexico as a gateway.
  • The port would offer an alternative to Mexican crude shipments to China and for goods arriving to Asia. The port also an offers entry point to rail routes across Mexico to the Atlantic and US East Coast.
  • The project could take as long as five years.
