MFP Proposes Amendment To Change Constitution, Fate Of Pita's PM Bid Remains Uncertain

THAILAND

Senators Seri Suwannapanont and Praphan Koonmee said that the pro-democracy coalition cannot submit Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat's name for the second vote on the Prime Minister position after his candidacy was rejected yesterday. House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha confirmed that the next round of voting will be held on July 19, but refused to clarify it Pita will be able to re-apply.

  • Seri and Praphan cited parliamentary regulations prohibiting the resubmission of a motion that was dropped, but said that the final decision sits with the Speaker. Praphan deployed more hawkish language, noting that MFP supporters should give up hope for installing Pita as Prime Minister.
  • MFP lawmakers are looking to propose amending Article 272 of the constitution, which gives the junta-appointed Senate a role in electing the Prime Minister. They are expected to bring the proposal to the floor around 09:00BST/15:00ICT but it would need to be backed by at least 1/3 of the Senate, which is highly unlikely.
  • Local media outlets report that the MFP and Pheu Thai are holding talks on how to proceed about the next rounds of the PM vote. According to Khaosod, a "press conference room has been set up," with Pheu Thai PM candidates Paetongtarn and Srettha expected to join.
