MIDEAST: Biden To Hold Call w/Qatari Emir Amid Effort To Push Gaza Peace Plan

Following the speech from US President Joe Biden on 31 May outlining a three-part proposal to end the war in Gaza, Barak Ravid at Axios reports that Biden will hold a phone call later today with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, with the purpose of discussing "efforts to obtain a deal to release the abductees in exchange for a cease-fire in Gaza." The role of Qatar is seen as crucial in reaching a ceasefire deal as it is more influential on Hamas than either the US or Egypt, the other mediators in the indirect talks, and as such if Biden can sell Qatar on the deal then it could see Doha place more pressure on Hamas to accept. 

  • A delegation from Hamas is expected in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on 4 June to hold talks with Egyptian and Qatari officals on the Israeli ceasefire proposal. 
  • Ravid: "A source privy to the talks between the mediators and Hamas said that so far the organization has responded positively, but did not explicitly say that it accepts the Israeli offer [...]Senior Israeli officials estimate that Hamas' response will be "yes, but"."
