ARGENTINA: Milei Wants To Be First To Join US Trade Accord, Economic Activity

- Continuing his US visit over the weekend, President Milei said in a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference that he hoped Argentina would be the first country to join the reciprocal accord that the Trump administration has proposed on trade matters. On his US trip, Milei also discussed his proposal for a free trade agreement with the US and, in a meeting with President Trump on Saturday, agreed on the importance of both countries working together. Economy Minister Caputo also joined the trip to Washington where he met with US Treasury Secretary Bessent and IMF MD Georgieva.
- In other news, La Nacion has reported that Federal prosecutor Eduardo Taiano has requested information to investigate President Milei for his endorsement of the Libre memecoin on X.
- On the data front, the calendar is light today, with focus this week on December economic activity figures, which are due tomorrow. Data released earlier this month showed that both IP and construction activity picked up in December and analysts see the economy having gained momentum at the end of last year, with growth improving to +3.5% y/y, from 0.1% in November.
- According to the latest BCRA survey, analysts see GDP rebounding by 4.6% this year, after an austerity-induced recession last year.
