Missile Found Near Bydgoszcz May Have Been Russian Projectile-RMF FM

POLAND

RMF FM radio reports "unofficially" that Polish military experts investigating the incident determined that a projectile recently found near the city of Bydgoszcz in northern Poland may have been a Russian Ch-55 cruise missile, which is not used or stored by the Polish army.

  • The projectile was discovered in a forest near Bydgoszcz at the end of April. Initial reports noted that it had inscriptions in Russian but suggested that it may have been an old projectile used by the Polish army in a test of a new missile defence system.
  • New findings imply that the missile could have flown into the Polish airspace from the east. The report circulated by RMF FM highlights that Poland does not have Ch-55 missiles or systems that could launch such rockets.
  • The report links the incident to a large-scale missile strike on Ukraine conducted by Russia in mid-December using bombers stationed in Belarus. RMF FM reports that Polish authorities detected an object entering the country's airspace from Belarus but lost it from the radars near Bydgoszcz and failed to recover debris.
