Mixed Breadth Behind Payrolls Strength, On Balance Similar To February

  • Digging further into the strong payrolls details, the breadth of job gains improved in March to 59.4% but only from a downward revised 58.6% vs an initial 62.6%.
  • This 1-month diffusion index of 250 private industries has now declined over the past three months from a recent high of 63% in Dec.
  • Looking by sector, gains were driven by two strong increases from familiar, and non-cyclically sensitive, culprits: health & social assistance (81k in Mar after 85k) and govt (71k in Mar after 63k).
  • Combined, the two sectors made up 50% of total payrolls growth in March although that’s down from 55% in Feb for their lowest share since spring 2023.
