MK Party Launches Last-Minute Talks With IFP About KZN Coalition Deal-News24

SOUTH AFRICA

News24 reports that ex-President Jacob Zuma's uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has opened last-minute negotiations with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) to govern the KwaZulu-Natal province, where the MK received 45% of the vote beating all its rivals.

  • An earlier Mail & Guardian report suggested that the IFP was moving closer to a deal with the African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA) and National Freedom Party (NFP). Under the touted agreement, IFP's local leader Thami Ntuli would be tapped to become provincial premier.
  • A broad ANC-DA-NFP-IFP coalition would deprive the MK Party of some of the key benefits of their electoral victory in the southeastern province, while also allowing the four parties to test the GNU formula (especially when it comes to ANC-DA cooperation), which is on the table in national coalition talks.
  • The MK Party's last-ditch move may upset the apple cart for those rooting for the "government of national unity (GNU) formula. On IFP's part, News24 note that the party seeems to be "hedging its bets on a coalition bloc led by itself, with the ANC, DA, and NFP."
  • Note that the IFP will hold a media briefing this afternoon (16:00BST/17:00SAST) to comment on ongoing national-level and provincial-level coalition talks.
