MNI: 5 Things We Learned From Frgn Investmt In Cdn Securities>

     OTTAWA (MNI) - The following are the key points from the monthly 
data on Canada's international transactions in securities released 
Thursday by Statistics Canada: 
     - Foreign investment in Canadian securities totaled C$16.8 billion 
in September, up from C$9.8 billion in August. 
     - Foreign investors favored Canadian debt securities, with C$12.8 
billion, over equities at C$3.6 billion. 
     - Within debt securities, foreign investors focused on bonds 
(C$18.7 billion) while divesting from money market instruments (-C$6.0 
billion, the largest divestment since March 2014). During the month, the 
Bank of Canada raised the policy rate to 1.0% from 0.75% and long-term 
rates rose 29 basis points. 
     - Within Canadian bonds, foreign investors split purchases between 
federal government bonds (C$9.5 billion) and corporate bonds (C$8.8 
billion). 
     - Canadian investment in foreign securities slowed to C$2.4 billion 
from C$12.1 billion, with a focus on equity and investment fund shares 
(C$1.7 billion).
