MNI BRIEF: BOC Now Holds Less Than CAD1B of Treasury Bills

OTTAWA (MNI)

The Bank of Canada's holdings of treasury bills have fallen below the billion-dollar mark for the first time in records back to 1980, down to CAD974 million earlier this month.

BOC records always show some treasury bills on its books, and former officials told MNI the bank could rejoin auctions but it is possible they would allow their holdings to disappear. The BOC earlier in the pandemic opted not to bid at regular government bill auctions as focus shifted to bond purchases supporting its QE program, now in a reinvestment phase.
