MNI BRIEF: BOC T-Bill Holdings Are Lowest Since 1986 Amid QE

(MNI) Ottawa

The Bank of Canada's treasury bill holdings fell to the lowest since 1986 as the central bank continued a 5-month streak of sitting out new auctions, focusing instead on QE purchases of federal government bonds.

The bill stockpile shrank to CAD5.38 billion as of Sept. 8 from CAD5.64 a week earlier and CAD52 billion at the start of the year, according to figures from the central bank. BOC records back to 1980 always show some T-bills on its books, and former officials told MNI the bank could rejoin auctions but it's possible they would allow their holdings to disappear. Governor Tiff Macklem on Thursday laid out a plan to halt net new bond purchases and signaled the BOC may allow QE to fade after it raises interest rates.
