MNI BRIEF: BOE Cancels Appearances Until After Election
BOE officials go quiet during election period in line with official guidance.
Governor Andrew Bailey and other senior Bank of England officials have cancelled planned speeches as the central bank adheres to government rules on refraining from public comment during an election campaign, a spokesperson for the Bank confirmed Thursday.
"As with previous general elections, the Bank will be following the Cabinet Office’s election guidance, which includes limiting communications activities until after the election," the Bank told MNI.
"Core communications in pursuit of our statutory objectives, such as MPC and FPC minutes, records and summaries, necessary supervisory statements and routine data releases, will take place as planned," the statement added. (See MNI POLICY: BOE To Proceed As Planned Despite Elections)
The BOE’s Monetary Policy Committee meets on June 20, although financial markets are pricing no change in Bank Rate from the current 5.25%.
