Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda said on Monday that the BOJ must firmly support the economy with easy policy in order to achieve its 2% price target accompanied with wage hikes in a stable and sustainable manner.

Kuroda told lawmakers that the year-on-year rise in consumer price index will fall below 2% in fiscal 2023, although Japan’s core CPI, boosted by the rise in import prices, rose 4% y/y in December. He also said import prices have been falling.

The BOJ board’s median forecast for core CPI in fiscal 2023 is a 1.6% rise, down from the median forecast of 3.0% this fiscal year.
