MNI BRIEF: Canada Ends Emergency Act, Days After Trucks Moved

OTTAWA (MNI)

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday the government is ending its use of the Emergency Act, after most heavy trucks and protesters were cleared away from Parliament last weekend.

"We are confident that existing laws and by-laws are now sufficient to keep people safe," Trudeau told reporters. The law could have been in place for another three weeks without the move, he said. He defended the use of extraordinary powers criticized as overreach by some lawmakers saying “we cannot shy away from using tools that are necessary.”
