MNI BRIEF: Canada Housing Starts Post Biggest Rise Since 2021

OTTAWA (MNI)

Canadian housing starts rose the fastest since November 2021 with a 22% gain in April, a federal agency said Monday, despite government worries about a housing squeeze amid record immigration and the rising cost of materials.

The seasonally-adjusted annual rate of construction rose to 261,559 units from 213,780 in March, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation said, much higher than the Bloomberg consensus for 220,000 units. The six-month moving average of starts was still down 0.2%. (See: MNI: Trudeau Told Falling Prices To Hurt Homebuilding-Briefing)
