MNI BRIEF: China Discussing Placing Tariffs On Auto Imports

MNI (BEIJING) - Chinese authorities have recently discussed potentially placing tariffs on large engine imported cars, He Yadong, spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, said on Thursday.

He said experts advised such tariffs would be in line with WTO rules and conducive to the green transformation of the automobile industry. For next steps, the relevant departments will study the meeting’s findings and support the green and low-carbon transition of the car industry, He said.

The auto industry is at the heart of current trade tensions between the globe's major trading blocks, with the U.S. and Canada imposing tariffs on Chinese EVs (see MNI: EU To Maintain Piecemeal De-Escalation On China Trade)
