MNI BRIEF: China Seeks Stable Relations with US - Wang

MNI (Singapore)

The US and China should seek to understand each other's domestic and foreign policies, strategic intentions, and establish a tone of dialogue rather than confrontation, China's Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi said at a press conference, where he outlined details of the meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden In Bali.

Wang said the first meeting between the two leaders in three years set a clear direction for China-US relations as both leaders said they attached great importance to the relationship and hoped to gradually steer bilateral relations back on a healthy and stable track. The agreed to strengthen communication and exchanges, and promote practical cooperation.

The two leaders discussed five topics: domestic and foreign policies, China-US relations, the Taiwan issue, dialogue and cooperation in various fields, and major international and regional issues. President Xi said China-US relations should not be a zero-sum game and the world must avoid repeating the mistakes of the Cold War.

President Xi highlighted the achievements and significance of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, saying the internal and external policies of the party and government are open and transparent, and China maintains a high degree of continuity and stability.
