MNI BRIEF: CMU May Be Undertaken By EU State "Subset" - Draghi

M

The long-delayed EU Capital Markets Union might be more effectively developed by "enhanced cooperation" among a "subset" of EU member states, Former ECB President and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said Tuesday

Speaking in Brussels, Draghi proposed a new EU strategic tool for the coordination of economic policies between member states, but cited smaller groups could push ahead if needed.

The comments come as EU leaders gather this week to discuss European competitiveness. EU states are still at odds on important elements of the CMU, such as corporate taxation, where some states are pushing back against harmonisation efforts.
