MNI BRIEF: December Inflation Lower Than ECB Expected-Centeno

December’s eurozone inflation at 9.2% was “slightly lower” than European Central Bank policymakers had expected, Bank of Portugal Governor Mario Centeno said on Friday, but added that rate hikes should continue.

Inflation should begin to fall more rapidly from March to levels around 3% by the last months of 2023, Centeno told an event in Lisbon

But the ECB should continue its hiking cycle until it is clear that the 2% inflation target will be met, he said, adding that inflation harmed the European economy more than higher rate hikes will cause. (See MNI INTERVIEW: Need Strong ECB Hikes For Early CPI Win -Kazaks)
