MNI BRIEF: Escriva Bank Of Spain Governor Nominee

MNI (ROME) - The Spanish Government has nominated Digital Transformation and Civil service Minister Jose Luis Escriva as new Bank of Spain Governor, Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo told parliament on Wednesday.

Escriva has previously served as deputy director of the Bank of Spain’s department of monetary and financial studies and as head of its monetary research unit, as well as head of the ECB’s monetary policy division for the first five years of the euro from 1999 to 2004. He then did a six-year stint as chief economist at BBVA. (See MNI SOURCES: ECB Neutral Debate Heats Up As Growth Weak)

His appointment comes despite a lack of agreement on the matter with the opposition Popular Party, in a break from recent practice.
