MNI BRIEF: EU'S Von Der Leyen Details New Commission
MNI (LONDON) - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has named her new commissioners Tuesday, with France getting one of the most-prized roles, that of Executive Vice President for Industrial Strategy and the Single Market for their late-named candidate Stephane Sejourne.
Italy also succeeded in getting Raffaelle Fitto an EVP role for Cohesion, Reform and Investment despite a political squabble between the socialist, liberal and centre-right EPP and ECR political groups over his appointment, while veteran Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis takes the key EVP role for economy and productivity, according to a post by Von der Leyen on X.
The new structure of the Commission is designed to be more streamlined and is also a response to the Draghi Report on European competitiveness. Von der Leyen said that she hoped the new Commission would be in place as soon as possible but noted that "all due diligence" had to be completed by the European Parliament
