MNI BRIEF: Europe Should Avoid Subsidy Race With U.S.-Lindner

(MNI) ROME

Europe should avoid a subsidy race with the U.S. in response to the Inflation Reduction Act and concentrate on economic reform, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner told a Davos panel on Friday, adding that the U.S. will anyway struggle to maintain IRA payments in coming years.

Many European policymakers "tend to follow the U.S." and that it is a mistake, Lindner said. The EU is currently preparing two reports focused on the matter with former Italian prime ministers Enrico Letta focusing on the single market and Mario Draghi on competitiveness.
