Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is hospitalised after an apparent shooting attack at a political rally in the city of Nara, footage from state broadcaster NHK showed on Friday.

Abe, 67, was reportedly shot by a man in his 40s, Kyodo News reported, citing police. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida cancelled campaigning for July 10 upper house elections and was said to be set to address the press later on Friday with any updates.
