MNI BRIEF: "Far, Far Too Soon" For ECB Rate Cuts - Makhlouf

Dublin

It is "far, far" too early for the European Central Bank to talk about cutting interest rates in the eurozone and it may even be too soon to take further hikes off the table, Irish central bank Governor Gabriel Makhlouf said Wednesday.

Speaking on a panel in Dublin, Makhlouf said recent warnings from the International Monetary Fund not to declare victory too soon should be heeded. However, he acknowledged inflation is on a downtrend and that hopefully central bankers could look to a period of rate stability. New projections at the ECB's December meeting will be key, he said.

Makhlouf's comments echoed those earlier Wednesday from Belgian national bank head Pierre Wunsch.
