MNI BRIEF: Fed’s Powell Says Asset Runoff Could Start In May

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in response to a question from MNI that the Fed could begin shrinking its USD8.9 trillion balance sheet as early as its next meeting.

That “could come as soon as our next meeting in May,” Powell said, although he stressed the committee had not yet made an official decision. Powell also said the balance sheet plan is likely to be previewed in the minutes of the March meeting that will be released in three weeks. "It will look like the way we did things last time, but securities will run off faster."
