MNI BRIEF: Japan May Machine Orders Post 1st Drop In 3 Months

TOKYO (MNI)

Japan's core machinery orders, which exclude volatile orders for power generation equipment and ships, fell 5.6% m/m in May, for the first drop in three months, data released by the Cabinet Office on Monday showed.

The Cabinet Office left its assessment unchanged from April that machinery orders showed signs of recovering. Machinery orders are a leading indicator of capital investment but the data fluctuates sharply month-on-month.

Orders from the manufacturing sector fell 9.8% on month in May, for the first drop in three months. Orders from the non-manufacturing sector excluding those for power generation and ships fell 4.1% for the first drop in three months.
