MNI BRIEF: Kazaks Gets Second Term At Latvian Central Bank
MNI (LONDON) - Martins Kazaks will serve a second five-year term as Governor of the Latvian national bank following a confirmation vote in the parliament.
The appointment comes after nearly two months of political infighting accroos the national assembly, which saw one deputy governor serve as a stand-in governor for six weeks and the other deputy at first nominated as the new governor only to pull out when support in the governing coalition splintered.
Kazaks, who will return also to his role as a member of the ECB's Governing Council, first became head of the Latvian central bank in 2019 after a decade in the private sector as cheif economist at Swedbank. He gained his PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics. (see MNI INTERVIEW: ECB Should Cut In October, Says Kazaks )
