MNI BRIEF: Mexico President Promises Trade Retaliation Sunday
MNI (BRASILIA) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that she will announce retaliatory measures in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's 25% tariffs on Mexico, which take effect today.
"The unilateral decision made by the United States affects both national and foreign companies operating in our country and impacts our people. Therefore, we have decided to respond with tariff and non-tariff measures, which I will announce publicly next Sunday," Sheinbaum said in a press conference.
In February, the U.S. agreed to pause the implementation of the trade tariffs for one month in exchange for stricter border enforcement by Mexico and Canada.
"I want to make it clear today that we will always seek a negotiated solution, as we have proposed, within the framework of respect for our sovereignties," she added.
